It was a pleasure to take photos of the MGA5K held at Town Center, Leawood, KS last May 21, 2017. Everyone, young and old, came to support the MGA Triple Crown Showdown Myasthenia Gravis Association (MGA) of Kansas & Missouri through a fun, competitive, and also leisurely event. What I love most about this fundraiser is that everyone has the opportunity to participate. They have the following options:
I am so glad I got involved in this project because it was heartwarming to see everyone gather in support of a disease that a lot of people don't know about. The prevalence of Myasthenia Gravis is a f 14 to 20 per 100,000 population, approximately 36,000 to 60,000 cases in the United States according to Howard, Jr., MD.
I met Danielle Walk, Executive Director of MGA, at one of the KCK Chamber monthly events called Business After Hours (a networking event). I just read about the nicotinic acetylcholine (Ach) receptor for a research project, so we connected right away when she mentioned her organization. Myasthenia Gravis is an autoimmune disease associated with antibodies directed to the postsynaptic acetylcholine receptor. Danielle informed me about the MGA Triple Crown and I decided to participate.
According to her, there were about 80 volunteers who came to set-up at 7:00 am. Runners and walkers of all ages poured in around 7:30 am for the 8:00 am start time. I manned the MGA Triple Crown step-n-repeat banners. It was very windy so our banner stand and sand could not keep it standing. I have to say special thanks to the two patient and strong guys that held it up the whole time (you can even see their shadows behind the banner on some of the photos).
I was also able to capture the participants with their medals. I do apologize for making you smile after running 5 miles. It was a wonderful time. When it was done, it wasn't even noon yet, so I went to get a little unhealthy breakfast and went back to sleep. See you next year!
